Element Info
The video shows an autonomous driverless Mercedes-Benz Actros on a Mercedes-Benz testing ground in 1999. It was the first time a quasi autonomous truck was presented.
The truck follows a track that it been teached-in with an accuracy of ±2 cm. It can even park backwards. The navigation system uses a GPS system from Götting and works without installations in the track. Manual operation by a driver is always possible. For example a driver could steer the Actros to an industrial area (like a port), then he leaves the vehicle that then autonomously drives onto the area where it is unloaded and loaded, then the truck returns to the entrance where the driver takes over again.
